Kanker is located in the Bastar Region (towards the South) of the State of Chhattisgarh (which was previously a part of Madhya Pradesh). The place was identified as an independent district in the year 1999.

The History of Kanker can be traced back to the Stone Ages. The residents at that time in Kanker are identified as a barbaric group whose habits resembled those of animals. According to the legendary epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata, the region around Kanker was covered with dense vegetation that prevented accessibility. At a later stage, Kanker was inhabited by a number of saints and sages like Kank, Lomesh, Shringi, and Angira.

In the 6th century B.C. Kanker was influenced tremendously by Buddhism which has been revealed by evidences. In about 106 A.D., Kanker was an independent state belonging to the Satvahan Dynasty. How to Reach
KankerBy Road: There are regular deluxe bus services form Raipur. Private cars are also available on hire.

Best Season to visit: This region has a pleasant climate form October to March. Most of its festival also fall in this period. The hills are verdant and abuzz with wild life. Most of the festivals also fall in this period: Kanker mandi (January), Narayanpur mandi (February-March), Baster Dussehra (October). The weekly haat (market) at Bahaigaon and Narayanpur are held on Sundays and Thursdays.

By Air: Regular flights by Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Air Deccan and kingfisher connect Raipur to Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneshwar and Indore.

By Rail: Raipur is the nearest railhead. Daily overnight trains connect it to Delhi, Calcutta, Mumbai, Bhubaneshwar, and Bhopal.
