Mehrangarh Fort Jodhpur, Rajasthan (Entry Fee, Timings, & History)
History of Mehrangarh Fort
Mehrangarh Fort, perched majestically above the city of Jodhpur, is a beacon of Rajasthan’s rich history. Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the fifteenth ruler of the Rathore dynasty, the fort’s name derives from “Mihir” (sun) and “Garh” (fort), signifying the Rathore’s solar deity lineage.
The fort’s construction began when Rao Jodha sought a new capital, choosing the strategic Bhakurcheeria hill, or the Mountain of Birds. Legend tells of Cheeria Nathji, a hermit residing on the hill, who cursed the fort’s construction. To pacify the hermit and lift the curse, Rao Jodha built a house and a temple for him nearby.
Mehrangarh Fort’s architecture reflects its grandeur and resilience. With seven imposing gates, including the celebrated Jai Pol (Gate of Victory), the fort narrates tales of historic battles and victories. Within its robust walls lie palaces like Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), and Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), each showcasing exquisite craftsmanship.
Over the centuries, Mehrangarh Fort has stood as a symbol of the Rathore dynasty’s strength and opulence. Today, it houses a museum with royal artifacts, offering a glimpse into Rajasthan’s royal heritage, and continues to be a testament to Jodhpur’s storied past.
