History of Lake Pichola Udaipur
Lake Pichola is one of Udaipur’s most iconic and beautiful lakes, with a history that dates back over 600 years. It was created in 1362 by a local banjara (tribal nomad) named Pichhu Banjara, who built a dam across the streams flowing down from the surrounding hills to meet the water needs of his village. Over time, the lake was expanded and developed by the rulers of Mewar, particularly Maharana Udai Singh II, who founded the city of Udaipur around it in 1559.
The lake is surrounded by stunning palaces, temples, and ghats (steps leading to the water), which reflect in its calm waters, creating a breathtaking view. Two of the most famous structures on Lake Pichola are the Jag Mandir and Lake Palace, both built on islands within the lake. The Lake Palace, in particular, is known worldwide as one of the most luxurious hotels, offering guests an unforgettable experience in the heart of the lake.
Lake Pichola is not just a beautiful sight but also an important part of Udaipur’s heritage. The lake has been a source of inspiration for poets, artists, and writers for centuries, capturing the imagination of all who visit.
Today, Lake Pichola remains a popular destination for tourists who come to enjoy boat rides on its tranquil waters, watch the sunset, and take in the stunning views of the city and the Aravalli hills beyond. It’s a place where history, culture, and natural beauty come together, making it one of Udaipur’s most cherished treasures.
