History of Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort, also known as Sonar Quila or the Golden Fort, is one of the most famous forts in India, located in the heart of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan. Built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal, the founder of Jaisalmer, the fort stands as a testament to the rich history and culture of the region.

The fort is made of yellow sandstone, which gives it a golden hue, especially during sunrise and sunset. This is why it’s often called the “Golden Fort.” Rising from the desert sands, the fort is a massive structure with high walls and 99 bastions, making it look like a scene from a fairy tale.

Jaisalmer Fort was not just a military stronghold but also a thriving city. Inside its walls, there were palaces, temples, houses, and markets, where people lived and worked. Even today, many people still live inside the fort, making it one of the few “living forts” in the world.

Throughout its history, Jaisalmer Fort has witnessed many battles and sieges. It was a key point on the ancient trade routes, and the rulers of Jaisalmer gained wealth by taxing the caravans that passed through. However, it also made the fort a target for invaders.

Over the centuries, the fort has seen the rise and fall of many rulers but has remained a symbol of the bravery and resilience of the people of Jaisalmer. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a popular tourist destination, admired for its stunning architecture and rich history.
