History of Sajjangarh Palace

Sajjangarh Palace, also known as the Monsoon Palace, is a striking hilltop residence located in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. Perched on the Aravalli Hills, the palace offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding lakes, palaces, and the city of Udaipur. It was built in 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh, the 72nd ruler of the Mewar dynasty, who envisioned it as an astronomical center and a place to watch the monsoon clouds.

Maharana Sajjan Singh, known for his progressive vision and keen interest in architecture, initially planned the palace to serve as a nine-story astronomical observatory. However, his untimely death led to the project being scaled down to a more modest summer retreat. Despite the change in plans, the palace remains an architectural marvel, showcasing the grandeur and elegance typical of Rajputana style.

Constructed with white marble, the palace is adorned with intricate carvings and features wide balconies that offer panoramic views. The palace is equipped with a unique water harvesting system, which collected rainwater for use during the dry season, reflecting the foresight and engineering skills of its time.

The palace was later used by the royal family as a hunting lodge and a place to enjoy the cool breezes during the hot summer months. Today, Sajjangarh Palace is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors who come to marvel at its beauty, enjoy the stunning sunset views, and experience a piece of Rajasthan’s regal history. The palace, now under the care of the Rajasthan government, stands as a reminder of the grandeur and ambition of the Mewar rulers.
